Kedarkantha summit is located in Uttarkashi district of Garhwal Himalayas in the state of Uttarakhand. It comes under Govind Ballabh Pant Wildlife Sanctuary area. The trek is marked with well-marked trails, gradual ascents, snow-clad peaks, and the early morning summit push and well-placed campsites. This high altitude trek is an easy one, popular winter trek and it requires three days to complete from the village Sankri. If you want to do this track from Dehradun, it will take around five days and four nights. This track is a busy one and you will get basic amenities like water, food, tea, snacks very easily at various tea point located during the track route, though the prices are bit high than MRP, but you will get everything in this track.
Day 1
On first day, we covered a total distance of 220 km from Dehradun to Sankri Village. In order to reach Sankri Village we took a traveller that was booked by our travel company. We were ready by morning 6 and were excited for this trek. Our first experience was not very good because our agent changed our travelling vehicle twice, and at last, we got a vehicle and we started our journey from Dehradun in morning 8:30 AM. And it took our whole day to reach Sankri Village. In between our way, we went to the riverside of Yamuna and we spent half an hour around the bank, listening to the music of flowing river. We clicked few pictures and continued our journey.
Day 1

Our route from Dehradun to Sankri comprise of Silakui , Nainbagh, Puraula, Naugaon, Mori. We travelled across the river valley of Yamuna and Tons River. Flood plains of these river valley was wide and fertile. Valley from Purola to Mori is famous for red rice, which got GI tag in the year 2023. Under GI tag, it is referred to as "Uttarakhand Lal Chawal (Red Rice). This rice has got a very high nutrition value, fibre content and is a good source of anti oxidants.
We reach around evening 8:30 PM. When we reach to the village, it was dark already, and we couldn’t see any beauty. We stayed in a hotel and received our dinner over there. The dinner was a decent one. We were so tired, so we slept well. The rooms were clean and tidy, and we were supplied with the geyser, hot water.
Day 2
On day, two, we wake up early in the morning. We had our breakfast in the morning 8:30, after that, we packed our bag with essential things and we joined our team and our guide, and we started our trek from Sankari Village. Our tour agency briefed us about the do"s and don"ts during the trek. we get to know that we had a group of 14 people.
First, we took a tour of the village, few Himalayan peaks were visible from the village itself. lush greenery of the Himalayan valley can be seen in the village.
On this day, we have to reach Shepherd camp from Sankri Village. The distance between Shankari Village to Shepherd camp is around three and half kilometre and we covered this distance in around four hours.
We started a trek through forest and at the end we landed with snow capped meadow where our camping site was located. this site was approximately one kilometre before Juda Ka Talab, where most of the camp sites were located. we had our lunch our here, we were surprised to have fried rice, noodles and manchurian for lunch.
today was 31st December, 2024 so we asked for campfire. but our guide told us that burning fire in this area is not allowed. So we asked nearby tea point person for bonfire, he provided us with space and firewood for rupees 100 per person i.e. total rupees 1400. We

Day 3
on this day, we travelled from Shepherd camp to Kedarkantha base camp, and the total distance covered by us was around 4.5 km. Trek of this day was an easy one, and in between we saw Juda ka Talab. It is a lake situated in the upper Himalayas due to winters, the lake was frozen.
There are many mythological stories about Judha Ka Talab: According to a popular belief, a group of Jews took refuge in the Garhwal Himalayas to escape persecution. They settled near Kedarkantha and formed a small community. He built a small temple on the banks of a glacial lake called Judha Ka Talab. According to another belief, the name "Juda Ka Talab" is a corrupted form of "Jada Ka Talab", which means "Lake of Hair". According to this legend, a princess named Jada lost her hair in a storm. She cried on the shore of the lake, and her tears filled the lake.
From Juda ka talab, the trek passes through Conifer Forest. And we reached our base camp around two in afternoon.
We had our lunch, and after that, we rested for few minutes, and then we have a tea at 5 o’clock and soup at 6 o’clock and we had dinner at 7 o’clock and we slept early as the next day we have to climb Summit and for that, we have to wake early in the morning, so on that day, we slept early.
Day 4
Who it was the day of Summit climbing and we already excited due to excitement, we couldn’t sleep properly. We woke up at two in the morning and we get ready and by three. We started climbing to the summit. our tour guide instructed us to match the base of all the team member so that we all can reach to summit. For initial three hours or two and half hours, all the team members walk together, and after reaching second tea point, we increased our pace so that we can see the sunrise from Kedar kaha peak. Watching sunrise from the peak was a rewarding experience.
Kedarkantha peak is around 3810 meter high and it is situated within Govind Wildlife sanctuary.
According to legend, Lord Shiva meditated on the summit of Kedarkantha, but was disturbed by local villages and moved to Kedarnath instead. A small shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva is located at the summit. The name Kedarkantha translates to "the throat of Lord Shiva".Another local myth says that the Pandavas went to the Himalayas to seek Lord Shiva's blessings, but he hid from Bheem and disguised himself as a bull. Bheem recognized him and went after him, so Shiva hid underground. When he rushed out from his hiding place, his body parts got divided, and each part fell at a different place. His throat fell on the Kedarkantha.
And we reached at summit around 6:40 AM and sunrise occur at 7:20. In between these 40 minutes, our hands and feet got frozen, and we felt very cold. We felt numbness in these parts of body.
Around 8 o’clock. All the team member join us and we clicked a photo group photo, and after taking the group photo, we started climbing down towards our big camp.
In between, we took few routes comprising of snow, sliding, and instead of walking, we preferred sliding on snow, that was a new experience for us.
There was snow and snow everywhere, and from the summit, we can see a huge range of himalayan peaks and mountains that comprise of Har ke Doon, Swarg Rohini glacier, black peak, and Trishul.
The sunrise was amazing and with the heat from sun or feet and hands, start getting normalise as we receive some warmth.
The track route was very scenic and had freeze of devdar, oak, and Rhododenron.
At some places, the valley was very wide and was covered with snow, and it was looking very beautiful.
We reached back to base camp by 1 o’clock and we had lunch over there, and then we started climbing down towards Shepherd Camp and we reach Shepherd Camp by 4 o’clock in the evening. It was our last night in the camp.
Day 5
On this day, we started our journey from Shepherd camp to Sangri Village on food, and after that, we took a traveller from Sankri Village to Dehradun and we reached Dehradun by 9 o’clock in the evening or 9 PM.
We did this track in the month of December 2024. There are various tool companies that provides this hiking experience at various prices. The price range from ₹5000 to 9000, we did this track with discovery, hikes and overall experience was great. The food and logistic support was great and throughout the track, we receive proper guidance as well as comforting, stay and nutritious food. We booked our track through Roopkund Heaven and we got it for prize ₹5500 and it was for five days and four nights, and the track was from Dehradun to Dehradun. A tour guide on this track was Ram Rana, a decent and committed trek guide.
